Ski Touring

Our ski touring programme includes ski touring skills, day tours and full-on hut-to-hut tours.

With unlimited potential for fresh tracks the backcountry is where the heart of every true skier resides. Recent years has seen a surge of interest by many skiers from resort based skiing into travelling beyond the resort boundaries away from the lifts and crowds.

Although lifts come in handy for accessing the backcountry, ski tourers often climb on their skis as much they descend. The Val d’Anniviers has many fabulous touring possibilities; summits, remote valleys, steeps, multi-day excursions. If required, our certified instructors and guides will teach you how to use the gear, travel on 'skins' and help improve your backcountry skiing technique. Whether your objective is to ski untracked powder or simply to experience the tranquility of touring away from the masses, look no further than GZBA.

If you’re new to off-piste and backcountry skiing, please first check out our instructional off-piste options. You’ll enjoy ski touring SO much more, if you’re able to ski efficiently and in a controlled manner in ungroomed terrain. Walking uphill for hours has to be rewarded with great downhill skiing!

This is the ideal opportunity for off-piste skiers to learn all the essential skills required for introductory ski touring trips. Sessions combine use of skins, how to kick turns, avalanche awareness, glacier travel, navigation and route finding skills with short ski tours and lots of great off-piste skiing. Perfect for adventurous skiers. No previous ski touring experience required. Skills include: route planning and navigation, skinning skills, glacier travel, crevasse rescue, transceiver training, recognising avalanche terrain and avoiding avalanches. You can book for any amount of days.

Enjoy the combination of wonderful full-day touring with the comfort of resort-based hotel or chalet accommodation! Typical daily outings will include 2-3 hours of skinning interspersed with canny use of lifts – hey, we don’t want to tire ourselves out too much – and superb ski descents leading to some of the Val d’Anniviers more remote corners. You can book one or more day tours with an overnight in a hut if you wish.

The Val d’Anniviers offers some of the best hut-to-hut touring in the Alps. The majestic Imperial Crown is home to 4-5 strategically located huts and offers sublime ski touring outings. Excursions across the borders into other valleys e.g. Zinal to Verbier or from Zermatt to Zinal (we call it the ‘ZZ tops’ tour) can also be arranged. The Imperial Crown Haute Route derives its grand name from the range of 4,000m peaks that encircle the Val d’Anniviers, including the Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn and Dent Blanche. This is stunning ski touring terrain which is more remote than other better known Haute Routes but is every bit as spectacular. Travelling with a guide will give you the opportunity to reach higher into the mountains and experience the Imperial Haute Route in a truly unique way, away from the 'regular' visitors.
